About Purple Hibiscus
Growing up in Enugu, Nigeria, Kambili and her brother Jaja live an upper-class life, detached from the world outside. But even within this seeming perfection, the two kids face an abusive father and eventually the deteriation of their priviledged existence when a military coup attempts to take over Nigeria. They move in with their professorial aunt, and learn to appreciate a life a learning and free from their dominating father. While we may not all be from Nigeria, Purple Hibiscus is actually a relatable coming-of-age story from a fresh perspective that can serve as an escape or a helpful reminder about the world outside of ourselves and across the ocean.
